Who We Are

Mission: To promote the humane treatment of companion animals through protection, placement, education, and example.

At the Capital Area Humane Society, we are passionate about animals. Our wide variety of programs and services exist to serve the pets and people of Mid-Michigan. We have an excellent staff of nearly 40 animal lovers who see each adoption as a victory. More than 10,000 animals come through our doors each year. The shelter receives no tax dollars or government funding and relies on the generosity of donors to help us provide love, food, shelter, and medical care to homeless and abandoned pets. We are a local, private, and independent animal welfare organization founded in Lansing in 1936 and all donations and gifts directed to the CAHS are used to assist the animals in the greater Lansing community.

What We Do

Our key services and programs include:

  1. Animal Shelter and Adoption: CAHS provides shelter for homeless, abused, and abandoned animals. They work to find permanent, loving homes for cats, dogs, and other pets through their adoption services.
  2. Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation: The organization rescues animals in distress, providing medical care, rehabilitation, and behavioral support to prepare them for adoption.
  3. Low-Cost Veterinary Services: CAHS offers affordable spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and other veterinary care to help reduce pet overpopulation and improve animal health in the community.
  4. Humane Education: CAHS engages in public education programs that promote responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, and the prevention of cruelty to animals.
  5. Volunteering and Community Involvement: The organization relies on volunteers for animal care, fundraising events, and outreach, creating opportunities for community members to get involved in supporting animal welfare.
