Who We Are
Mission: To provide an environment and value system whereby our callers are given acceptance, support and a safe opportunity to talk to a trained crisis counselor minus any judgement
The Listening Ear was founded on July 15, 1969 as a culmination of efforts between Michigan State University students, faculty and community residents. These individuals banded together in the hopes of doing something constructive in light of the unrest caused by the Vietnam War.
What We Do
Since its founding in 1969, it has offered services such as counseling for survivors of sexual assault, advocacy, and community education. The organization is known for its confidential, free services, which are available both by phone and in person. It also runs programs like sexual assault counseling, crisis support for children and families, and homeless youth interventions. Volunteers at the Listening Ear receive extensive training before they begin their work, with ongoing education to ensure quality care.
