path toward rebuilding.
After the Storm provides support for recovery and rebuilding efforts following disasters throughout Michigan, drawing on an understanding of the challenges associated with post-disaster recovery. The organization has experience addressing the complexities involved in rebuilding and recovering after various disasters, both locally and across the state.
After the Storm is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established by the Michigan Conference of The United Methodist Church in 2022. It was created in response to a flood affecting Detroit and Southeast Michigan. In the same year, the organization also contributed to tornado recovery in Gaylord, working alongside more than 100 families during the rebuilding process.
The Michigan Conference developed expertise in long-term disaster response and recovery, collaborating with federal, state, and local partners. To maintain this expertise, an independent organization was formed. After the Storm works with individuals and organizations regardless of religious affiliation, and donations are tax deductible.
Previously, the Michigan Conference participated in long-term disaster recovery projects across the state, including initiatives in Houghton/Hancock, the Great Lakes Bay region, and in response to a major dam breach in Midland.
