Who We Are

Mission: To provide free civil legal assistance to low income persons with emphasis on homelessness prevention, domestic violence prevention, assisting in accessing health care, food, and needs-based income programs.

Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) is a nonprofit organization providing free civil legal services to low-income individuals and senior citizens across 13 counties in south and central Michigan. With staffed offices in Lansing, Ypsilanti, Battle Creek, Jackson, and Monroe, as well as satellite offices in other counties, LSSCM prioritizes urgent cases to keep families safe, preserve housing, maintain economic stability, and support vulnerable populations. Our systemic advocacy efforts aim to alleviate the barriers faced by low-income individuals, ensuring access to justice and essential resources for over 542,000 eligible residents in the region.

What We Do

LSSCM offers a wide range of civil legal services designed to address the critical needs of low-income individuals and families. Our services include providing information, advice, document preparation, negotiation, and court representation tailored to the unique circumstances of each client.

Our focus areas include:

  • Family Law: Preventing domestic violence and maintaining stable homes.
  • Housing: Preventing homelessness through advocacy against illegal evictions and foreclosures.
  • Public Benefits: Securing income for basic needs.
  • Consumer Matters: Protecting economic stability and addressing fraudulent practices.
  • Health Care: Helping clients access essential medical care.
  • Special Legal Needs for Older Adults: Protecting the elderly from exploitation and ensuring access to necessary resources.

In addition to individual representation, LSSCM provides legal advice to community organizations and conducts educational talks for client groups to address pressing legal issues. Through these efforts, we strive to empower vulnerable populations and foster a stronger, more equitable community.
