Who We Are

Mission: To provide the services and support for individuals to achieve their own definition of success and quality of life.

Capital Area Community Services, Inc. is a Community Action Agency. CACS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1964. CACS was born from President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty and the advocacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

CACS works toward eliminating the causes and conditions of poverty in Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, and Shiawassee Counties by providing programs in childhood education, nutrition, weatherization, housing, and financial counseling. We are proud to have served 18,076 people in the Mid-Michigan area during 2020.

What We Do

Capital Area Community Services, Inc. provides a variety of services meant to assist individuals and families address and alleviate issues related to poverty.

Our main focus areas include:

  • Head Start – Head Start and Early Childhood Programs is a comprehensive preschool program serving income-eligible families with children ages birth to 5 years old.
  • Food Programs – Our two nutrition programs distribute food in four counties in order to meet one of humanity’s most basic needs – food security.
  • Housing – Certain housing services are only available in Shiawassee and Clinton County.
  • Financial Self-Sufficiency – Financial resources for families through free, low-barrier access to financial literacy education and support.
  • Weatherization – This program is designed to help lower utility costs by making homes more energy-efficient.
  • Senior Assistance – Services are available for persons 60+ years of age who reside in Ingham, Eaton, or Clinton Counties.
