Who We Are
Mission: To provide educational services to adult refugees that enable them to earn a high school diploma in an atmosphere of peace, respect, encouragement, and inspiration
At GIL, we believe that newcomers are invaluable members of our community, and as such, deserve an accessible, quality education. We aim to build a stronger, more inclusive community through engaging those most in need of assistance and providing them a greater degree of self-sufficiency and economic opportunity through education.
What We Do
GIL offers day and evening classes for adult refugees and immigrants. To be eligible for GIL, students must be 18 years and older and must be a refugee, asylee, or other eligible immigrant.
Prospective students must also pass an English proficiency exam. During the school year, classes are held at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Lansing and meet Monday through Thursday from 90:00am to 2:00pm. Summer hours are determined at the start of each summer.
Our program includes access to an accredited online high school, a full-time ESOL teacher, part-time math instruction, and volunteer support for one-on-one and small group tutoring. Upon completing all required classes, students receive an accredited high school diploma from Excel High School. We recently expanded our programming to include a Mentoring Program and Career Exploration Program in addition to high school completion.
