Haven House accepts applications for court ordered Community Service Volunteers with the following guidelines.

Restrictions on Service of Volunteers

- Only non-violent infractions accepted. (No assault and battery, armed robbery, domestic abuse, larceny, destruction of property, etc.)

-May not be a sex offender nor have any cases pending.

-No illegal drug related charges or convictions.

-No retail fraud and embezzlement charges or convictions. 

Application Process

-Apply online to be a volunteer and answer every question on the application.

-You will then be contacted to attend an orientation if you are eligible to complete service hours.

Scheduling Hours

-Shifts are 2 to 4 hours.

-Dates and times of service must be arranged and approved by the Volunteer Manager.

Attendance

-The Volunteer Manager must be called in advance if you will be absent and if unavailable, leave a voicemail (517) 348-0688. Also, contact the office (517) 337-2731 and speak with a live person to cancel your shift if Volunteer Manager is not in the office.

-More than one no call no show could result in termination of the program.

-You are to clock in and out via the app called My Impact. Credit will not be given if you fail to do so. Falsification of hours will result in immediate termination.

-You are responsible to be on time and complete all assignments. Poor performance may result in your termination.

Office volunteers serve a unique role as a liaison among staff, clients, and other volunteers. This provides one of our most interactive volunteer opportunities. The primary tasks include:

Answering phones and transferring calls to correct staff member.  When a person calls requesting shelter, it is important to obtain enough information to determine if the person really needs shelter and is suitable for our shelter, to do this we use our phone screening.   You might collect in-kind donations from a donor during their scheduled appointment time and provide their receipt. You might help other volunteers or clients have access to the supplies they need. There are many opportunities to take on additional or alternate responsibilities in the office volunteer role. 

*this role requires at least a (2) hour training after orientation.

To do this, we use an electronic tracking system called inFlow and all donations coming into the shelter or going out to clients must be accounted for. With the constant movement of donations the inventory counts can become inaccurate so regular tracking of inventory in all areas is necessary.  Volunteers interested in this position will commit to at least 2-4 hours M-F checking inventory on a weekly rotation for preventative measures as well as when inventory is found to have discrepancies. Volunteer: Freezer Entree'

Haven House is looking to have meals on hand for nights there is not a volunteer to prepare, so staff has a delicious homecooked meal to warm and serve. Entrees we can freeze with instructions on top on how to reheat and what the meal is. We serve dinner for up to 30 people so all entrees must be for this quantity. 

Meals can be casseroles, Italian, various meats, except pork, vegetable sides, etc. Haven House can provide the ingredients needed for meals, but you are welcome to purchase if you would like.

Please email pclevenger@havenhouseel.org with your interest for this opportunity and we can discuss possible meals you would like to prepare, ingredients, etc. From there, we will coordinate ingredients pick up, if needed, and meal delivery date/time to Haven House.  

This opportunity is very flexible as it is on your own time to prepare the meal either once a month, once a week, etc. and schedule a delivery to Haven House during regular business hours so this can be properly stored.

Any grease used for cooking MUST be poured in the container labeled “grease” next to the stove, NOT down the drain. Cook what is listed with some of your own changes or additions Cook your own recipe with our ingredients Cook your own recipe with your ingredients

 

COOKING OFF-SITE:

We recommend arriving at 3:30 pm. Any menu items needing defrosting should already be in the refrigerator before you arrive, shelter staff does this. If you plan to deviate from the menu, let us know so we do not defrost unless needed.

Meals should be prepared and ready by 5:30. Dinner is served buffet style.

Dinner volunteers ARE required to clean any meal prep dishes. All pots & pans, knives, cooking utensils, bowls, mixers, blenders, crock pots, roasters, etc. used to prepare the meal must be cleaned before clocking out. Dishes will need to be washed, rinsed, sanitized, dried and put away, and the oven and stove-top cleaned, if needed. The supplies you will use, where to find them, and more detailed instruction will be discussed during your tour. 

*Be sure to "cancel" via your account if you cannot make your dinner preparation as scheduled so shelter staff can be prepared to make dinner that night. Calling the shelter to cancel as well is helpful in case Volunteer Coordinator is not in the office to receive automatic cancellation email*
