Who We Are
Mission: To support small and urban farms in the Lansing area and integrate food and farming into larger community building efforts.
Urbandale is your neighborhood farm. It was established in 2010, the first agricultural venture of the Lansing Urban Farm Project. The nearly two-acre farm is located in the 700 block of S. Hayford in the heart of the city’s 100-year flood plain. Since 2010 the farm has quadrupled in size and production. A 30’ x 48’ hoophouse was built on the farm in 2012, made possible by grants from the Ingham County Land Bank and the City’s Office of Planning and Neighborhood Development.
What We Do
LUFP aims to:
- Increase Access to Fresh Produce: The farm produces fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, helping to address food insecurity in urban areas. The produce is often sold at local markets or distributed to low-income residents.
- Provide Education: LUFP offers educational programs on sustainable farming practices, gardening, and nutrition. These programs are aimed at empowering residents, especially youth, to grow their own food and learn about urban agriculture.
- Community Building: By engaging community members in the farming process, LUFP fosters a sense of collaboration and belonging. The project promotes volunteerism, offering opportunities for local residents to contribute to the farm’s success.
- Job Training: The organization also provides job training and internships in agriculture, giving people hands-on experience in farming and food production.
